Political structures (How have different forms of governance been constructed and maintained over time?)
Classical Period
Persian Administration
- Persian Empire was so large that it was becoming difficult to control
- Darius implemented the following policies to help manage the empire
- 1. Divided empire into Satrapies (regional states) ran by a Satrap (regional governor who answered to the king)
- 2. Satraps were appointed by a king but all other officials were local to the region; this allowed the satrapies to be locally administered for the most part.
- 3. Allowed religious freedom throughout empire
- 4. The king sent "spies" or eyes/ears of the king to check on satraps (keep them from rebelling)
Creation, Expansion & Interaction of Economic Systems [ECON]
The Persian Economy
- Agriculture: Basis of economy, wheat and barley main products, irrigated the land with underground tunnels called qanats (major fertile areas were Mesopotamia, Egypt, Anatolia, and northern India)
- Taxes: collected taxes using standardized coins from the Satrapies of the empire
- Roads: Built the Royal Road which connected the empire and established a postal system; improved communication and trading throughout Persia. Long distance trade was a major part of Persia's economy (land and sea)
***Whatever types of visuals you use (pictures, maps, graphs, charts, videos) should all have some sort of caption explaining them. You should never just throw in random visuals; your captions should explain your visual and why you think it is important. EVERY visual, it does not matter what type, should have a caption explaining it***
